US Stock Sep 25 Closing Brief

Sep 25, 2026, 4:23 p.m. ET

US indexes closed higher as AI infrastructure momentum and industrial strength offset weakness in mega-cap tech; the Dow led while the Nasdaq lagged. VIX fell nearly 5% to 14.90 as risk appetite improved. Watch next week's inflation data and the Oct 2 jobs report for clues on the Fed's October rate path.

Closing Summary

U.S. stocks finished higher on Friday as a broad-based advance led by industrials and technology offset a mixed session in mega-cap growth names. The dominant theme remained AI infrastructure demand, reinforced by a multi-billion-dollar cloud services commitment to an AI developer, while investors also digested fresh earnings from a major retailer.

Fear gauges eased, with volatility falling sharply as risk appetite improved into the weekend. The rally was not uniform: the Dow Jones outpaced the Nasdaq as mega-cap AI leaders diverged, with Microsoft surging while Meta and Tesla weighed on sentiment. Direction for next week now hinges on upcoming inflation data and the labor market report, which will shape expectations for the Federal Reserve's next rate decision.

Indexes

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.93%.

The S&P 500 Index rose 0.49%.

The Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.48%.

VIX fell to 14.90, -4.91% on the day. Trading activity was moderate, with SPY and QQQ volumes reflecting steady participation into the Friday close.

Stock & Sector Performance

Sectors. Industrials led the session, with the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) up 0.94%. Technology followed, as the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) gained 0.79%. Financials (XLF, +0.57%), health care (XLV, +0.50%), consumer staples (XLP, +0.45%) and utilities (XLU, +0.43%) also advanced. Laggards were communication services (XLC, -0.93%) and energy (XLE, -0.86%), with real estate (XLRE, -0.22%) also in the red. The leadership pattern shows a rotation toward economically sensitive and rate-sensitive groups while growth-heavy communication names lagged.

Magnificent Seven. Microsoft (MSFT) was the standout, climbing 3.66%. Apple (AAPL) rose 1.53%, Alphabet (GOOGL) added 0.46%, Amazon (AMZN) was little changed at +0.12%, and NVIDIA (NVDA) edged up 0.22%. On the downside, Meta Platforms (META) fell 3.33% and Tesla (TSLA) dropped 1.57%. The split within the group helps explain why the Dow outperformed the Nasdaq despite the broad advance.

Notable individual movers. Akamai Technologies (AKAM) surged roughly 15% after announcing a seven-year, $11.6 billion cloud services agreement with AI developer Anthropic, underscoring the market's appetite for AI infrastructure exposure. Equinix (EQIX) gained about 5% on accelerating enterprise AI infrastructure demand and bullish analyst updates. People Inc. (PPLI) jumped more than 10% on a report that MGM Resorts International is weighing a potential takeover bid. On the downside, Twilio (TWLO) fell about 4% after a broker downgrade.

Major Company News

Costco Wholesale (COST) reported quarterly results that beat estimates on Friday, extending recent momentum in the consumer staples complex and providing a positive earnings signal ahead of the broader reporting season. While the Akamai-Anthropic infrastructure deal was the most visible single catalyst, no single dominant company story drove the index-level move; Friday's advance was sector-wide, led by industrials and technology.
