A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30, 2025, causing significant damage to the Rybachiy nuclear submarine base. Satellite images reveal that a floating pier at the base was broken, although no major damage to submarines has been reported. The earthquake is noted as one of the strongest in the region in decades.

On July 30, 2025, an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck near the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, leading to damage at the Rybachiy nuclear submarine base, which is a key facility for the Russian Pacific Fleet. The earthquake occurred approximately 140 kilometers from the base and was followed by a tsunami warning due to the seismic activity.

Satellite imagery obtained from Planet Labs shows that one of the floating piers at the Rybachiy base was damaged, appearing to be broken away from its moorings. This pier is crucial for the docking of submarines and other naval vessels. Prior to the tsunami, two Yasen-class nuclear-powered attack submarines were observed docked at the base, but reports indicate that there has been no significant damage to the submarines themselves.

The earthquake is reported to be the strongest seismic event in the region since 1952, highlighting Kamchatka's location within the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its high seismic activity. Following the earthquake, residents experienced power outages and disruptions in mobile service, and they were advised to stay away from the coastline due to the tsunami threat.

While there were reports of injuries among the local population, no fatalities have been confirmed. The Russian government has not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the extent of the damage at the submarine base or the overall impact of the earthquake.

In the aftermath of the quake, several aftershocks were recorded, with magnitudes ranging from 6.2 to 6.8. The situation remains under observation as authorities assess the damage and ensure the safety of the affected areas.
