Bavarian police have arrested three suspected members of the far-right Reichsbürger movement, who are accused of plotting to violently overthrow Germany's constitutional order. The arrests took place during early morning raids on August 7, 2025, across the states of Bavaria, Saxony, and Thuringia.
The General Prosecutor’s Office in Munich confirmed that the three male suspects were taken into custody following coordinated operations targeting six individuals, including five men and one woman aged between 40 and 61. Approximately 300 investigators were involved in the raids, which included searches of four properties linked to the suspects' activities.
Authorities allege that the suspects participated in a firearms training event in April 2022 at a former German army shooting range near Bayreuth. This training is believed to have been part of preparations for a possible armed assault on the German Bundestag in Berlin. Prosecutors view this as indicative of broader paramilitary preparations by the Reichsbürger network, which rejects the legitimacy of the Federal Republic of Germany.
During the raids, investigators seized weapons-regulated items and electronic data storage devices for further analysis. The evidence collected may help determine the suspects' level of involvement and whether the group received wider support.
The Reichsbürger, or "Citizens of the Reich," is a loose network of conspiracy theorists in Germany who do not recognize the legitimacy of the modern German state. They believe that the German Empire still exists and that the current government is an illegitimate entity. The movement has been under increased scrutiny due to its growing radicalization and links to violent incidents.
In December 2022, several key figures within the Reichsbürger movement were arrested, including Heinrich XIII Prince Reuss, who is believed to be a ringleader. Ongoing court proceedings involve numerous individuals charged with terrorism and high treason related to the group's activities.
The German government has classified the Reichsbürger movement as a serious domestic threat, noting its increasing willingness to resort to violence. The arrests on August 7 are part of a broader investigation into the group's activities and intentions.
