AsianFin--A Thai investigation into discounts from China's BYD will proceed despite a cash-back program from its distributor, addressing consumer backlash over perceived overpayments for their electric vehicles, a senior official said on Friday.

Thailand, a key regional auto assembly and export hub, stands as BYD's largest overseas market, where it leads in electric vehicle sales. BYD recently inaugurated its first factory in Southeast Asia in Thailand last month.

This week, Rever Automotive, BYD's Thai distributor, announced a cash-back program and charging station discounts valid until March 2025. According to a Facebook post by Rever, existing BYD customers can receive up to 50,000 baht ($1,382) cash back on their next purchase of the ATTO 3 or BYD Seals models from July 18 to the end of August.

However, the investigation by Thailand's Consumer Protection Board will persist as new complaints continue to surface, now totaling over 100, said Passakorn Thapmongkol, a senior official at the agency.
