During the first six weeks of 2023, China’s overall smartphone unit sales declined 7% year-over-year (YoY) and Apple underperformed with a 24% YoY decrease in iPhone sales, according to Counterpoint Research. The global technology market research firm noted key vendors like Apple, OPPO and vivo delivered double-digit declines in China but Huawei continued to attract and satisfy strong demand for its Mate 60 series, one of the only bright spots to the start of the year. OPPO and vivo’s sales plunged 29% and 15% YoY in the six weeks, respectively, while Huawei sales jumped 64%. Apple was ranked the fourth in these weeks with a 15.7% share of the Chinese market, down from the second place a year ago when it had 19% share. Huawei’s market share rose to 16.5%, putting it in the second, up from 9.4% a year earlier.
